Carola’s Trip to the Border Highlights the Need for Asylum Reform

Neighbors Link’s Executive Director, Carola Otero Bracco, recently had the opportunity to visit the Texas/Mexico border in Reynosa, Mexico and McAllen, Texas.  Her experiences during this trip highlighted the courage and resilience of people leaving their home countries and families in pursuit of safety. She was not surprised to find that all of the migrants she spoke with were following the rules laid out by the United States to try to obtain appointments and follow the legal process to apply for asylum, but they kept running into barriers with our very broken immigration system. This was  a stark reminder of the urgent need for practical and humane reforms to our asylum system. We hope you appreciate this video that gives a glimpse into Carola’s trip and some of the practical reforms that would make an immediate impact. If you would like to learn more about our work to support new arrivals in our region or how you can join us in advocating for more effective immigration policies, please contact Adrienne Vogel at avogel@neighborslink.org.
